Reading

At Featherstone Primary School we aim to provide a rich cultural, emotional and diverse reading curriculum. We strive to ensure that all pupils learn to read regardless of their background, needs or abilities. All pupils are immersed in a wealth of books from different genres, authors and cultures. At the heart of our reading curriculum is children’s enjoyment of reading. We aim to create an engaging and fun learning environment with reading at the centre of it

Key stage One

In Key Stage 1, Children are taught to read during their daily Read Write Inc session. For more information about Read Write Inc, please see the pages in this section dedicated to this.

Once children complete the Read Write Inc phonics programme, they are confident, fluent readers. This will usually happen in Year 2. Following on from the Read Write Inc Phonics scheme, the children move on to Read Write Inc comprehension scheme. This uses similar techniques and patterns but moves the focus to comprehension rather than the process of reading. This provides a bridging gap between Read Write Inc Phonics and Whole Class Reading. They will eventually move away from book scheme books and into a whole class/group reading lesson that mimics the format of Key Stage 2 at an age-appropriate level.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, children receive at least four whole class reading sessions per week.

These sessions provide opportunities for children to develop their vocabulary, independent reading skills, inference skills and comprehension skills.

Texts are chosen carefully for each year group to make sure that children receive a varied reading diet. These texts will often be linked to the class Power of Reading text that is being used in English.

As well as using written texts to support reading skill development, children are also given the opportunity to apply their inference skills to new contexts such as images, video clips and advertisements.

Our Library

We are very proud of our school library. This is fully stocked with a range of Fiction and Non-Fiction that the children are able to borrow to take home to enjoy as well as to read in school.

100 Book Challenge

The 100 Book Challenge is a whole school initiative that aims to encourage children to read for pleasure and experience a range of quality texts that they may not usually choose to. Each Year group has between 12/14 books to aim to read by the end of the year. If they complete every list children will have read 100 books during their primary schooling.

At the end of each Year, children receive a medal in recognition of their achievement. If children complete all 7 years of challenges then they receive an extra special prize.
