In Reception, we assess the children throughout the year. When children start in Reception, Teachers and Teaching Assistants form a baseline assessment, using information from the children's nurseries and other Early Years providers, as well as observations of the children in their first few weeks of starting. Once we have assessed the children, we use this to inform our planning and provision.

We use both formative (daily/weekly) assessment and summative (termly and end of year). At the end of the Reception year, both teachers submit final assessments made against the 17 Early Learning Goals to the Local Authority. These assessments are shared with parents in the children's end of year reports, as well as Year One teachers so that they can prepare accordingly.

The ways in which we gather evidence to inform our assessments are:

  • Observations of the children learning through play
  • Photographs and videos
  • Examples of writing
  • Pieces of art or constructed models

The majority of our assessements are recorded using Tapestry.
