Throughout the year, our children enjoy six exciting topics that spark curiosity, inspire imagination and help them discover more about the world around them. Each topic brings together wonderful stories, hands-on experiences, new vocabulary and opportunities to explore, investigate and learn through play.
Our topics provide meaningful contexts for learning, alongside our carefully sequenced teaching of essential knowledge and skills. We also follow children's interests and ideas, making every half term an exciting learning adventure!
Autumn 1
Marvellous me
Welcome to Reception! This half term is all about settling into school, making new friends and discovering what makes each of us special. We will explore our families, feelings, likes and dislikes, and learn how we grow and change. Through stories, play and exciting activities, we will celebrate our differences and discover that we are all marvellous in our own way!
Autumn 2
Sparkle and Shine
Get ready for a half term full of sparkle and wonder! We will explore the fascinating world of light and dark, discover animals that come out at night and learn about special celebrations and traditions from around the world. From colourful fireworks to twinkling lights, we will enjoy sharing stories, making discoveries and celebrating together.
Spring 1
Calling all heroes!
Calling all superheroes! This half term, we will discover that heroes don't always wear capes! We will learn about the amazing people who help us every day, from firefighters and police officers to doctors, nurses and vets. Through imaginative play, exciting stories and special visitors, we will find out how these everyday heroes keep us happy, healthy and safe.
Spring 2
Knock Knock... Who lives here?
Who's been sleeping in Baby Bear's bed? And can the Three Little Pigs build a house strong enough to keep out the Big Bad Wolf? This half term, we will step into the magical world of traditional tales! We will also explore different types of homes, discover how houses have changed over time and investigate the materials used to build them. Get ready for storytelling, building and lots of imagination!
Summer 1
Ready, Steady,Grow!
Get your gardening gloves ready! This half term, we will become little explorers as we discover the wonderful world of plants, farms and minibeasts. We will investigate how living things grow and change, learn where our food comes from and explore the tiny creatures living all around us. With hands-on discoveries and an exciting farm visit, there will be plenty to keep our curious minds busy!
Summer 2
Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside
Buckets and spades at the ready! This half term, we are off on a seaside adventure! We will discover what makes the seaside special, explore the amazing creatures living beneath the waves and find out how seaside holidays have changed over time. From sandy beaches to mysterious oceans, there will be lots to explore as we celebrate how much we have grown during our wonderful year in Reception!
